October is Fire Prevention Month
Every year in the month of October, our firefighters, like many others conduct fire prevention programs at our local schools and daycares. Pictured here to the left is our fire prevention "specialist" SPARKY. Sparky travels to all of our programs with us, he is quite the hit with the school children. Fire Chief Benner is also along to give his fire safety tips. Our firefighters explain the "gear" that a firefighter wears, and allow them to get up close to see that there is nothing to be afraid of if they should ever encounter a firefighter when they are "all dressed up". |

At some schools, we have been asked to stay for lunch, which is something new in the last 3 years. At lunchtime, the children have an opportunity to ask our firefighters as many questions as they would like. Each firefighter sits at the lunch tables with the children, putting them all on the same level.
Some schools ask us to do a demonstration of different things we do. Here on the left is a firefighter "gearing up" do do some rappeling (decending at a controlled rate of speed) from our ladder truck. This is a skill we would use if we were conducting a rescue in many different circumstances.
If your school or daycare would like to schedule a fire prevention program, contact Assistant Chief Craig Hanzl at Station 36; 610-266-2676
